Scarborough murder case: Partner appears in court

The man accused of murdering his partner at her Scarborough home appeared at court yesterday.

Nigel Pickard, 45, of Filey Road, spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth at the brief hearing.

He is accused of killing 29-year-old hairdresser Laura Smith, after an incident on Southwold Rise, Eastfield, over the weekend.

Police were called to the home on Sunday at 11.30am.

Miss Smith was declared dead at Scarborough Hospital at 5pm on Monday.

Pickard was charged with her murder shortly afterwards.

He appeared at Scarborough Magistrates' Court wearing a sky blue Ben Sherman jumper and light blue jeans.

He is known locally for running the Driving Ambition School of Motoring and has been a Scarborough Conservative Club committee member.

Miss Smith, who worked at the Hair by Helena salon in Westborough, was the mother of a seven-month-old baby.

The case was committed to Leeds Crown Court, where Pickard will appear tomorrow for a plea and case management hearing on a date to be arranged.

He was remanded in custody.

Police vehicles were still parked on Southwold Rise yesterday, as a forensic examination of the property continued.

Door-to-door enquiries have been carried out in the Eastfield area.

Anyone with any information that could help the investigation has been urged to contact Scarborough police on 0845 6060247, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
