Scarborough Council rocked by income decrease - COMMENT ON THIS STORY
A warning about Scarborough Council's finances was given at yesterday's cabinet meeting.
Introducing a report that says the council may have to find 490,000 from its reserves to balance the budget for this financial year, Cllr Jane Kenyon, the cabinet's new finance boss, said: "If you think this one's difficult, brace yourself for next year."
Several council departments have failed to meet expected levels of income generation, including the indoor leisure service which is 138,000 down on its target, mainly as a result of fewer people using the sports centre and the indoor pool at the North Bay, and the council's investment income which is down to 300,000 compared with 1 million last year.
The authority's financial director, Nicholas Edwards, said that the situation is not as bad is it could be because the authority had made provision for the shortfall such as business rates, which are expected to be down 250,000.
A drop in investment income was also planned for.
