Sarah continues fairytale career
A NEW selection of fairytale-inspired self portraiture combines one of Scarborough's most talented artist's passion for photography with her love of literature.
By placing herself behind and in front of the camera, Sarahphotogirl has been able to recreate some of her favourite moments from children’s stories.
The exhibition, Her Dark Materials, is currently being shown at Castle Howard.
Sarah said: “Alice falling down the rabbit hole was my first project – with 30-something separate photographs all merged together.
“It was great fun to do and quite a challenge – totalling more than 40 hours of hard graft.
“After Alice more scenarios were shot. A multiplicity image shot at Scarborough’s Harbour Bar soon became one of my most talked about images.”
Yorkshire Coast Collage’s costume department created six new outfits for more of her photo illustrations and the hair and beauty department spent hours with her at each of the shoots to style her hair.
Sarah added: “With only six weeks to create five new photographs we certainly had a challenge to behold and each day was more bizarre than the last with the studio opening its doors to witches on Harley Davidsons, Not-So-Petis-Pios and girls with rosy cheeks stalked by wolves.”
Sarahphotogirl has photographed such rock luminaries as Paul Weller, the Kaiser Chiefs and Madonna.
Her latest projects show her branching out from the music industry into new directions.
Sarah has named this new direction “Her Dark Materials”, inspired by author Phillip Pullman.
She said: “This is what I’ve been longing to produce – I have a vivid imagination and I need to humour it for a while! Moving on from the portraits was inevitable, I crave a challenge!’
Limited edition and signed prints are available to buy from Sarah’s website and an extended exhibition will run at The Living Room in York from July 31 to September 6.
