Rock impersonator on 'suicide watch'

A Scarborough man who posed as Hollywood wrestling star The Rock in a bid to gain free tickets and memorabilia from Premiership football clubs, has appeared in court after going AWOL before sentencing.

Wayne Scott, 35, formerly of Eastborough, pleaded guilty to three charges of theft when he appeared before York Crown Court last April but then vanished off the radar until his arrest last Friday.

The defendant, who now lives in Plane Close, Doncaster, was remanded in custody after denying a fresh charge of failing to surrender to custody.

Scott is said to have made false representations by posing as Dwayne Johnson, the superstar American wrestler known as “The Rock”, in order to obtain match tickets from Everton Football Club between July 1 and August 1, 2007.

He also made similar false representations to obtain both memorabilia and gifts from Manchester United on July 26 the same year.

The third charge faced by Scott is that between June 1 and July 31 2007, he posed as a person called Nigel Usher to obtain telecommunication services from BT.

These three cases were originally adjourned for sentencing last June, with Scott given bail on condition that he did not contact any charities and received out-patient treatment at a mental hospital in Doncaster.

David Garnett, prosecuting, told the court the pre-sentence and psychiatric reports ordered at the previous hearing were not ready because Scott had failed to comply or surrender to the court.

Andrew Semple, defending, claimed his client had a back problem which gave him difficulty walking and required hospitalisation.

He added that, since the April hearing, his client had been in hospital several times and had also undergone an operation.

Scott was arrested after informing hospital staff that he thought there might be a warrant out for his arrest.

The court again ordered the preparation of the reports but this time remanded Scott in custody until a new sentencing hearing on February 9, despite Mr Semple’s mitigation that his client was “very much perturbed” by his incarceration since his arrest and was on suicide watch.
