Residents angry at 'no rights to parking'
RESIDENTS in Blenheim Terrace, Scarborough, have been told they have no right to expect to park near their homes, despite paying for parking permits.
Ten residents from Blenheim Court signed a letter to Scarborough Council about the problems they have parking outside their homes in the tourist season.
In response, Bruce Bedford, the council's traffic and transportation manager, said: "Unfortunately no-one has the right to park outside their homes, and although a small charge is made for permits, these do not guarantee you a space outside your property."
Ian and Rosie Taylor, of Blenheim Court, say they would be willing to pay a reasonable increase for their permit if it guaranteed them a parking place.
Mr Taylor said: "Many of the residents are elderly people who sometimes need to be rushed to hospital but there is no way an ambulance could get to them because of the congestion.
"I have asthma and time is of the essence if I have an attack, but if my car is parked three streets away I dread to think what would happen.
"It's not an impossible situation to solve and I'm sure something could be done."
Cllr Godfrey Allanson, the council's cabinet member for environment, transport and public health, has asked for a report to be made on the area.
He said: "I am aware of the residents' concerns and I will look into the matter to see if we can do anything.
"If a traffic order has to be made it will have to be advertised and if any objections are received it will then have to go to cabinet and could be a very long, drawn-out process."
Cllr Allanson said if anyone wanted to write to him at the Town Hall about their concerns he would be happy to hear their views.
