Remembrance for the fallen

A THICK fog hung over Oliver’s Mount and lent a sombre atmosphere as old soldiers joined the younger generations for the annual Remembrance Sunday service.
The assembled congregation, which was estimated at more than 500, was reminded of the harsh realities of war when they were told of the 385th British casualty who was killed in the current conflict in Afghanistan.
Scarborough Mayor, Cllr John Blackburn, said it was important to observe the annual remembrance and honour those killed in all conflicts.
He added: “It’s been exceptional this year with a good turnout. I am delighted to see so many people here particularly with the weather the way it is.”
Peter Parkinson, the chairman of the Scarborough branch of the Royal British Legion, said it was the biggest turnout he had seen in years. He said: “It was a good one last year but this one is even better.
“It’s good to see the young ones here. I think it’s particularly important to keep remembrance going – especially with what is going on in the world today.”
The service was one of thousands held up and down the country yesterday to remember the millions who have lost their lives in conflicts past and present.
During the main service, led by the Rev Martyn Dunning, and wreath laying at Oliver’s Mount standard bearers formed a base around the war memorial.
Wreaths were laid by Cllr Blackburn as well as various branches of the Armed Services, military organisations, the police and fire service as well as individuals.
Two minutes’ silence was observed at 11am.
Queen Street Methodist Church also staged a Remembrance Day service which featured a blessing of the standards and wreaths, and a ceremony of the poppies, and was followed by a parade from the church to the lifeboat house.
The service continued at the lifeboat house where the two-minute silence was observed on the West Pier at 11am.
The wreaths were then taken on board a boat by the wreath carriers before being laid at sea.
In Filey a Service of Remembrance at St Oswald’s Church took place followed by a procession to the Murray Street war memorial.
Remembrance Sunday was also marked in Hunmanby with a service at Cross Hill Methodist Church followed by a short service at the War Memorial.
Services were also held in Scarborough and Filey on Friday in honour of Armistice Day, when a two-minute silence was observed at 11am.
