Railway company in line for a biz award
A SCARBOROUGH business is on track for another accolade after entering the 2009 Yorkshire Biz Awards.
Staff at the North Bay Railway Company are hoping to scoop an award at the event at the Royal Armouries in Leeds on June 26.
The company transformed the dilapidated 78-year-old railway line into one of the largest public transport mini railways in the country, housing the oldest diesel hydraulic locomotive in the world and attracting 175,124 visitors a year.
Owner Lesley Humphreys said: "When I started out I had little knowledge of the railway industry. After securing funding and challenging a predominantly male industry I overcame many boundaries.
"I gave up everything to bring the railway back to life. even in the recession we have seen a 56 per cent rise in visitors, which proves we are giving the public what they want, a fun and educational day out.
"Seeing the rundown site transformed into a successful attraction is a huge achievement. It is important to me and the team to celebrate how far we have come but also to represent Scarbor- ough as a tourist destination, so the opportunity to enter the Biz Awards was a must."
Now in their third year the Biz Awards celebrate those who have fought against adversity and overcome the odds to build successful businesses. They celebrate the extreme and everyday challenges faced by small/medium enterprises, culminating in an awards evening.
Mrs Humphreys said: "Our Glass House Bistro won the Continental Bar of the Year award at the Yorkshire Moors & Coast Tourism Awards last year.
"This accolade made us realise how much we had achieved since we began the restoration project.
"The Yorkshire Biz Awards could acknowledge not just our successes but celebrate how we got here and how proud we are to bring joy for generations by one of the oldest transportation lines in Britain."
