Railway line group on track for Lotto boost

ORGANISERS of a bid for Lottery cash to renovate the old Scarbor-ough to Whitby railway line will be asking people for their views.

The Friends of the Old Railway will be making the bid to Community Spaces and have produced a questionnaire to find out what use is made of the area.

It aims to find out how regularly people use the footpath, why and how they use it, any issues they have with it and what is the best thing about it.

Group spokesman Andy Sharp said: “We plan to raise the profile of the entrance to the route from Sainsbury’s car park, provide a new access ramp to Cross Lane, install extra bins and seating and improve public information.”

He added the improved information could include a guide to the whole route as well as artistic signage at the junction with Woodlands Ravine and the Manor Road Cemetery.

The old railway line covers a distance of 20 miles and operated from 1885 until its closure in 1965. Before its arrival the coast between Scarborough and Whitby was rarely visited by holidaymakers.

It was officially opened on July 16, 1885, and the link between the two towns was first suggested in 1848.

At the time, Robin Hood’s Bay was a small fishing village and an article printed in an 1884 edition of the Scarborough Gazette stated: “Robin Hood’s Bay has hitherto been almost inaccessible from Scarborough, and will ere long undoubtedly develop into a favourite watering place.”

Now it is a popular route with walkers, horse riders and cyclists because the majority of it is off-road.

Questionnaires are available from the Manor Road Nursery or can be downloaded from.friendsoftheoldrailway.org and completed forms should be sent 12 Barmoor Close, Scarborough, YO13 0RZ.
