RAF base involved in Endeavour space launch

RAF Fylingdales' staff have been using the base's super-sensitive radar to track the latest voyage of a NASA spacecraft.

Yesterday, Endeavour launched from Cape Canaveral, a day later than expected, and on board was astronaut Nicholas Patrick who was born near Great Ayton.

Mr Patrick has taken with him a small Colonial Red Ensign flag and a photograph of Captain James Cook who also flew the ensign on the Endeavour when he sailed off into the unknown back in 1768.

The shuttle's launch was delayed from Sunday as the overcast sky refused to clear and winds remained unpredictable to provide proper conditions for a safe launch.
