Rachael's flagging up North Sea race
SCARBOROUGH beauty queen Rachael Cooper will be waving the flag to signal the start of this year's North Sea Yacht Race tomorrow.
Around 20 vessels are due to take part in the event from Scarborough to Ijmuiden in Holland – considered by many to be the toughest sailing challenge on the East Coast's yachting calendar.
Race veteran Roger Buxton, who has taken part in the event 25 times, said: "Hopefully the weather will be better for us this year!
"Last year several boats turned back because the conditions were so poor including the yacht I was sailing on.
"Crossing the North Sea even in calm conditions can present the crew of a yacht with significant challenges and careful planning is always needed."
Miss Scarborough, Rachael Cooper, said: "It's not really something I would ever fancy doing.
"It was nice to meet up with some of the competitors who told me that it takes between 36 and 48 hours to make the crossing.
"As I get sea sick I don't think its for me, but I do feel all the people taking part are brave and I wish all the competitors the very best of luck."
Hundreds of spectators are expected to visit the harbour tomorrow as crews make their final preparation for the race which starts at 7pm.
