Quad bike raffle to help injured Tom

A GENEROUS garage owner is to raffle a new quad bike to boost the fund for injured Scarbor- ough soldier Tom Davis-Lawlor, as the amount already donated to the appeal rose to over £15,000.

Tony Poole, who owns T & S Garage, in Albion Road, spent 1,500 on tools to get the 110cc quad as part of a promotional deal.

He is the latest person to throw his weight behind the appeal for Tom, 19, of Bracken Hill, Barrowcliff, who lost both legs in an explosion while on foot patrol in Helmand Province in Afghanistan.

"I saw the offer for the quad bike as part of a deal for tools so I thought it would be a good idea to raffle it off for Tom. I wouldn't have gone for it if it wasn't for that," said Mr Poole. "I feel really sorry for the kid to have lost both legs at 19. Some of my children aren't much older than that so I want to raise as much as I can."

At the weekend members of the public gave over 1,000 for Tom through a collection held in the Brunswick Centre and supported by the Royal British Legion.

Scarborough mayor Bill Chatt, who has teamed up with the Evening News to organise the appeal, said he has been amazed by the support for Tom.

"I can't believe how many people have reacted to this tragic incident. The number of people that have come forward is quite remarkable.

"Some people came to the Bruns- wick Centre especially to donate, and even members of the British Legion who collect for the Poppy Appeal were amazed by people's generosity.

"I've had three cheques for 1,000, one for 10,000 and loads of smaller donations from individuals – the response has been absolutely phenomenal. It's been overwhelming for me."

Last week the fund was strengthened after local taxi firms Atlas and Nippy Taxis revealed their drivers would carry collection tins in their cabs and give their tips towards the appeal.

Raffle tickets for the quad bike cost 1 and are on sale from the Evening News reception in Aberdeen Walk, SOBA in Crown Crescent and T & S Garage in Albion Road.

The draw will be made at the end of February and the winner will be revealed in the Evening News.
