Progresson second casino plan: COMMENT ON THIS STORY
SCARBOROUGH'S second casino came a step closer when the council's cabinet approved a revised gambling policy and a budget of up to £5,000 to take the project forward.
The town is one of 16 in the UK to be granted permission for a new gambling venue under Government legislation introduced last year. It was granted a Small Casino Premises Licence – which gives permission for a small casino with a customer area of between 750 and 1499 square metres.
Bath, East Lindsey, in Lincolnshire, Luton, Swansea, Stranraer, Torbay and Wolverhampton also received licences for small casinos.
In a report to the cabinet, licensing officer Una Faithfull said: "The primary objective is that the design and impact of the casino should have a positive effect and change the image of the street or locality. The casino should be on a site which is in an area in need of improvement or redevelopment."
Three sites in town are being considered as potential casino locations – North Bay, South Bay and the town centre.
A consultation on public responses to the plan was also debated at a meeting of Scarborough Council's cabinet.
Mrs Faithfull said that she was "amazed" at the number of responses, and added: "The public in general agreed with the contents of the policy."
The proposals will now be debated at full council on Monday May 11.
Cllr David Jeffels, the borough's head of tourism and culture, said they would represent a move forward for the town, and added: "The aspirations are very wide ranging. If half of them are achieved it will benefit the town very considerably."
