SCARBOROUGH streets blighted by anti-social behaviour have been targeted in a new campaign.

Police have announced new moves to clampdown on street drinkers and drug addicts to clean up the town ahead of the summer season.

The zero tolerance measures mean officers can use a dispersal order to break up a 15-strong group who regularly urinate in shop doorways and are abusive to members of the public.

The six month order will take in Victoria Road, Northway, Aberdeen Walk, Westborough and West Square.

If the situation fails to improve, police can apply for a second order.

Councillors agreed to grant the order following a barrage of complaints from distressed residents and traders who face daily battles with the intimidating group.

Upset tourists have also voiced concerns, claiming the problem reflects badly on the town and puts people off making a return visit.

PC Harriet Green, from Scarborough Police, said: “It is good news for the town, especially with summer coming up.

“We want people to come to the seaside resort and see it as it should be and not have to endure people drinking and dealing drugs on the streets.”

The order will give officers powers to banish groups of two or more offenders causing problems in the town centre and arrest anyone who returns within 24 hours, before hauling them to court.

It also allows them to take young people under the age of 16 home and place them under a curfew between the hours of 9pm and 6am.

PC Green added: “As of this point we are taking a zero tolerance approach to their behaviour and we will be arresting them if they breach their dispersal order.

“CCTV is on board which will assist us in removing groups by letting us know where they are, as well as informing us if they come back to the area.”

If North Yorkshire Police bosses agree to the application, the order could be in place as early as next month.

Why does there seem to be a difference between someone falling out of Blue Lounge drunk at 2am then getting arrested for drunk and disorderly and someone falling about drunk at 10am outside the market hall?

i was under the impression that a drinking alcohol in the street bye law along with the Designated Public Place Order which gives the Police the power to prohibit the consumption of alcohol in a designated area are adequate powers to combat and crackdown on street drinking.

"Orville Smith, a store manager for Best Buy in Augusta, Georgia, told police he observed a male customer, later identified as Tyrone Jackson of Augusta, on surveillance cameras putting a laptop computer under his jacket. When confronted the man became irate, knocked down an employee, drew a knife and ran for the door. Outside on the sidewalk were four Marines collecting toys for the “Toys for Tots” program. Smith said the Marines stopped the man, but he stabbed one of the Marines, Cpl. Phillip Duggan, in the back; the injury did not appear to be severe. After Police and an ambulance arrived at the scene Cpl. Duggan was transported for treatment. “The subject was also transported to the local hospital with two broken arms, a broken ankle, a broken leg, several missing teeth, possible broken ribs, multiple contusions, assorted lacerations, a broken nose and a broken jaw…injuries he sustained when he slipped and fell off of the curb." Looks like we have the wrong type of curbs in Scarborough

I was sort of following this item - police applied to council for an order which the council granted. Job done, get on with it. Until I read the last sentence - 'If North Yorkshire Police bosses agree to the application, the order could be in place as early as next month.' So just who did apply for the order?

Well said number 4, couldn't have said it better. I dread going in the post office to, believe it or not, send a parcel, whilst these stinky scruffy types are waiting on their god given right to "get me giro man" Why is there always more scroats in there picking up handouts than there is normal folk doing normal post officey things. Shoot em all

Its worse then declaring them incapable. The drunks and dossers get declared ill so go on disability. Then they get their flatmate to declare themselves as the others carer, and vice versa, which gives them more money. Then they drink or junk themselves to death. It really is a sick joke.

Ive been living here for 14 years and its always been the same drunks smackheads and crackheads if the goverment didn't class them as incapable and give them a special allowance for booze then they would have no money to buy anything this country has gone mad with the amount of benefits they dish out to scum

This is a problem that occurs all year round but the councilpolice only want to address it when the season approaches. Do not the residents of Scarborough, who, after all, pay for local policing & government through their council tax for a full year, deserve all year round action by the police & council. It may also help the drunk problem if the distressed traders who run off licences stopped stocking the high strength ciders & lagers much favoured by the street drinkers. If I thought I had to rely on such custom to make a living I would shut up shop.

All the comments have worth, but none address the problem of why vigilantes must not start to take over. It is so hard to believe that society cannot police things properly within the law. The government are failing to do a real job of making communities secure. Local government have become totally corrupt. Has anyone a real idea of how we can turn around the silly game which Labour has left us to cope with? YEs, I was OLD LABOUR & CARED!!!!

Just where are these drug addicts and drunks that all over the place? It sounds like a gang of about 15 people who have been allowed to get away with stuff are going to be dealt with. Personally I would lock them all in a big compound with as many drugs and as much drink as they could possibly consume. I would leave them some loaded guns and knives to play with too, then go back in a week with shovels.

Agree with 1, this is astonishing. Are not urinating in shop doorways and being abusive to members of the public already crimes? To say nothing of dealing drugs. Will these cease to be crimes in 6 months time? Please, no gimmicks, no new initiatives, no zero tolerance policies, they know who these people are and what they do, so just arrest them.
