Plan gets thumbs-up from councillors
A PLAN to replace an existing wind turbine with a taller generator, near Gristhorpe, has been approved.
The proposal was submitted by bosses at Magdelane Grange Farm in Carr Lane and was considered by members of Scarborough Council’s Planning Committee.
It means that the existing two blade turbine – which measures 24.6m to the tip of the blade – can be replaced with a 50KW three-blade model measuring 34.2m to the tip.
Derek Green, one of the council’s planning officers, told committee members that there was a separate application for another turbine on neighbouring land but each application should be considered on its own merits.
He said: “It’s a simple replacement. It’s a more substantial turbine but it is recommended for approval.”
He added that the Ministry of Defence had no objections to the plan – they had initially objected to the proposal but were provided with additional information and had withdrawn their objections.
The new turbine would be about 120m west of the existing turbine – which would be dismantled on completion of the new turbine and relocated to the applicant’s other farm within the North York Moors National Park.
A spokesman for the applicant said that the generated power would supply the farm site and would represent a significant CO2 saving.
He added: “It’s the quietest turbine today – you have to stand near it to hear it. It is fixed at 42rpm so you don’t get shadow flicker or noise.”
Cllr Godfrey Allanson said that turbines were springing up “all over the place” and were beginning to cause problems.
He added: “I can see it is a replacement but it’s a low level area so it is very visible.”
Cllr Martin Smith said he welcomed the fact that the new design was quieter and there was no shadow flicker. He added: “Personally I think we shouldn’t take into account the other application at this meeting.”
Committee chairman, Cllr Jane Mortimer, reminded members that the fact a separate application for a nearby field had been submitted it should not affect the current decision.
Cllr Dilys Cluer said: “I think this one will look better than the old one.”

Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 05:25 PMCllr Allanson has at least got his head screwed on correctly with regard to these outrageous monstrosities, what a pity more people don't listen to him. Still, if Cllr Cluer thinks that it "will look better than the old one", that's what really counts isn't it??!!
