Petition on yellow lines plan for Manor Road: COMMENT ON THIS STORY

PEOPLE living in the Manor Road area of Scarborough feel so strongly about proposed traffic restrictions that more than 150 signed a petition objecting to the plan in two days.

It was organised by the owners of Manor Road Stores who believe reducing the speed limit along the busy road would be more effective in reducing accidents.

The planned parking ban would affect most of the east side of Manor Road.

Bruce Bedford, Scarborough Council's technical services manager, said: "The council is proposing traffic management measures on part of Manor Road. There is a bad accident history on this section of road, and the main contributory factors appear to be poor visibility coupled with inappropriate speed.

"The proposed measures therefore seek to remove those sections of parking that currently impede visibility and apply general traffic-calming techniques using central hatch – ladder – road markings that have the effect of both slowing vehicles down and achieving better

separation between opposing streams of traffic."

Jane Park, 41, who took over Manor Road Stores two years ago, said a proper crossing was needed to improve pedestrian safety because pupils walked along Manor Road to three schools.

She said: "There has been a couple of accidents and most of them have been on the bend. people are going too fast and if they slowed down there wouldn't be a problem.

"We are trying to form a committee. We want the residents of the area to join us and support us. We feel there are other options that are more viable for people living and working in this area rather than the current ones."

Lou Critchlow, of Manor Road, said residents from the area were "hopping mad" at the council proposal which, if given the go ahead, would have massive consequences for the local area.

Cllr David Billing, who represents Scarborough Council's Central ward, said he would be speaking on residents' behalf when the matter goes before the cabinet. He added: "Something needs to be done about the bend but this is like taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut."

Objections to the proposals should be made in writing no later than Monday February 22.
