Parking charges reduced - report
Marine Drive
COUNCIL chiefs have cut the price of the parking charges it plans to introduce in Marine Drive over the winter months.
Under the original proposals motorists would pay £1 for one hour’s parking, with anyone wanting to stay for a maximum of six hours charged £2, or £3 for 24 hours.
The move caused a public outcry after it was revealed in late-2011, and Cllr Subash Sharma, who represents the North Bay ward, handed a 4,241-signature petition against the charges in at the Town Hall last week.
However, according to a report set to go before Scarborough Council’s Cabinet on Tuesday, the authority is now proposing a charge of £1 for 24 hours parking.
Brian Bennett, the council’s head of tourism and culture, said: “There have been 19 letters received in relation to the proposed introduction of winter charging on the Marine Drive. In addition two petition containing over 4,200 signatures in total have been received.
“While accepting the comments made by the objectors it has to be remembered that the council is facing a difficult financial position this year and the original changes suggested to members, included a number of significant reductions at prime car parks.”
The council plans to lower charges at some town centre short stay car parks by 50p an hour, while doubling the cost of coach parking.
Mr Bennett added: “It was indicated in previous reports that these reductions were supported by increases and changes elsewhere, including winter charging on the Marine Drive, in order to maintain a balanced budget.
“It is not believed that a charge of £1 would act as a deterrent to visitors travelling to Scarborough.
“There are still free car parks at Scalby Mills, Burniston Road, Victoria Park and Northstead Upper. In addition there are a number of free disk controlled streets around the Marine Drive and on the seafront which are available for public use now.”

Friday, February 10, 2012 at 12:33 PMAbsolutely wrong. I would have 1 hour for FREE, upto 3 hours for a £1, then £5 for 24 hours. This means a quick walk and a cuppa for free. if you are popping to town then a little contribution, but then the overnight campers etc have to pay a fair charge.

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 02:44 PMWhat a stupid and misleading headline. It's the same old con of this SBC shower. 'We were going to charge more but now we're only going to charge you £1' - for something you already get for free. (They didn't say the last bit - probably hoping we're as stupid as them and we wouldn't notice.) What a bunch of useless cronies. Did they work it all out on their iPads? 4000+ people signed the petition against the introduction of parking charges at all - not to get them reduced, so presumably they can't even read.
