A number of 5 fines have been issued to residents and holidaymakers.

At the same time town traders are stepping up their opposition to the scheme introduced last month.

Visitor Michael Pye was given a ticket in the Peasholm Park area but argued there was no information for tourists about the new scheme.

Mr Pye, from Rotherham, said: I think it stinks. There is nothing to explain the system and as an outsider I had no idea how it all worked. There is just no warning about the scheme.

This will definitely make me think again about coming back. It has certainly put me off. It will destroy Scarborough.

The Evening News understands that several groups within the town are already planning their next protests and South Bay Traders Association has launched a public survey to find out if holidaymakers are happy with the scheme.

Justine Craven, of Rusbridge Jewellers and chairman of Huntriss Row Traders Association, said her group wanted the council to look at the scheme again in light of the criticisms.

The council remains steadfast in its defence of the scheme, which has prompted an unprecedented postbag to the Evening News.

The first tickets for parking in pay zones without a ticket were issued on Friday.

Cllr Godfrey Allanson, chairman of the environmental health and control committee, said: The scheme has now been in place for a month and some people are continuing to park inappropriately. We have been sensitive and sympathetic with its introduction to help people get used to it.

But to help make sure residents, shoppers and visitors enjoy the full benefits, the council is stepping up its enforcement arrangements.
