THE owners of a dog which allegedly savaged and killed a goose in sight of horrified onlookers will appear in court.

Police confirmed yesterday that a 29-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman had been reported for summons under the Dangerous Dogs Act following the incident in Valley Road.

A report of the alleged dog attack on the goose, which was said to have taken place near the pond under Valley Bridge, was made at around 4.40pm on Sunday, a North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said.

An eyewitness said they viewed the incident in the company of their 15-year-old daughter after they had enjoyed a family day out with a walk along Scarborough seafront.

They said: “We had been for a long walk down the Valley and along the seafront, culminating in a hot chocolate at the Harbour Bar.

“We were walking back along Valley Road and we saw the whole picture.

“The goose was squawking and flailing. There were people with children walking by.

“Police have said it could be an offence if they didn’t have the dog on a leash and hadn’t done anything to stop it.”

It is expected that the pair will appear at Scarborough Magistrates’ Court in the coming weeks to face the Dangerous Dogs Act charge.
