Outrage over statue attack - Watch the video

Waiting for Video...

SCARBOROUGH’S Freddie Gilroy statue has been attacked in a mindless vandal attack.

Yellow paint was thrown over the monument yesterday evening.

A Scarborough Council graffiti removal team has been at the scene since the break of dawn.

Maureen Robinson, who paid £50,000 to buy the statue for Scarborough in November, visited the scene this moring and wept as she witnessed the damage.

Scarborough has reacted with outrage and hundreds of pounds has already been added to a reward fund for information that leads to a conviction.

Cllr Derek Bastiman has pledged £100 to the pot.

He said: “I’m an incensed and horrified. We need to bring the culprits to book. I am sick to the stomach.”

Don't people have better things to do in this Town than going out in the cold to throw paint over a statue there just really is no need for that at all!!!

Yes, #50, Mindless vandalism!! Any vandalsim is mindless, but can also be planned. And being mindless does not mean that they would not have transport - ever seen the way that some drivers behave when behind the wheel??!! There's more being read into this than is justified!!

"An appalling act of mindless vandalism" #48? The area is quite remote and the attack carried out overnight. It would be fair to assume , I think, that the perpetrators had transport. I cannot envisage that they carried cans of paint onto the scene for an attack. Some planning is evident! Do mindless vandals have transport? My guess is not! Do mindless vandals plan ahead...I think usually not. The plot thickens....there is more to this than meets the eye.

It is an appalling act of mindless vandalism, nothing more, nothing less. In the relatively isolated site in which it is placed, it was an act of vandalism waiting to happen. I hope that the culprit(s) are caught, just as everyone else does, but I think that all this talk about it being "anti-Semitic" because it was done in yellow paint and coincided with Holocaust Memorial Day is a load of rubbish!! Can we also not forget that there have been numerous holocausts throughout history, many hundreds of millions being murdered by the (revered by many) Communist regimes in the very recent past??!!

So, TSbnp is in complete agreement with #11 'gassing and sterilisation' is she. Well well well, where have I heard that before. Also #38 - I haven't heard what Cllr Jeffels said, but by saying the 'anti-Jewish slant' is criminal seems to be missing the point that this was done on the eve of Holocaust Memorial Day - the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. It was done with yellow paint - a colour used by the Nazis and also by our own King Edward I in the 13th century to identify Jews. It was done on a statue linked to the liberation of Bergen-Belsen, a camp that held Jewish inmates. I would say that an anti-Jewish agenda is a viable line of enquiry for the police on this one.

Scumbags are scumbags regardless of socioeconomic demographics. What I find more disturbing is that The BBC allowed such tripe to be broadcast. #42 Haven't you in that comment proved you're no different to everyone who has disturbed you by taking the time to write their thoughts on this story?

It's very disturbing that a lot of the posters on here appear to have imagined a culprit, decided it was definitely them, imagined thier family and peers, imaginined that those people are all somehow related and have consciously asserted themselves as a race, decided on thier parentage and have gone on to imagine that thier imaginings are now confirmation that it was definitely the imagined culprit they dreamed up in the first place. Of course none of the people who imagined up a series of punishments would ever have the b*****ks or the motivation to action any of them. Altogether, this is more worrying than the news article. By the way, I've noticed that the most disruptive members of the Scarborough society are the offspring of affluent middle class parents from the periphery of town and the scary small villages which lie beyond...

Absolutley sickening-the mindless idiots have defaced what is in it's very existance a memorial to the holocaust and the sacrifice of the 60 million people killed in World War Two, 451,000 people were British. For God's sake what on Earth could bring someone to do something so sickening-have they no morals.....? They need to be identified, placed in stocks in front of the statue and face retributiion from the people of Scarborough-A day in Court would be too easy an option for these abhorrent scumbags. I am totally sickened by their actions....

I think it was a co-ordinated attack by a flock of seagulls that have been drinking from McCains toxic effluent pipe near Cornelian causing their droppings to glow green!

I am utterly shocked, however should I be when this statue was first on view did we not have a comment on it "Vandals will be at it withing a month"? Maybe, for the vandals an all paid for trip down the memory lane of the man this statue depicts. Yes an all paid for trip, to one of the many holocaust centres, even to the camp where it all started. I may sound naive, but let them see what this man saw as a young man in his teens or early twenties. As for an accidental spill, yeah now I am sure Pigs do fly over Scarborough. conzy boswell

What is even more criminal is the anti Jewish slant Cllr Jeffels tried to spin on this act of vandalism. A disguise cooked up to hide the fact that Scarborough has a high proportion of mindless scumbags in the name of tourism, rather than face up to the problem they invent a fantasy which could actually create even more racism
