A SCARBOROUGH family has been celebrating an extra-special Christmas after their one-year-old son started life-changing medical treatment.

Ciaron Eaveson, of Langdale Road, suffers from a head abnormality called plagiocephaly – also known as flat head syndrome – which can be treated using a special helmet costing 2,000.

Earlier this year his parents, Graham and Paula Eaveson, were told York Primary Care Trust would fund the treatment but the trust later backed out, leaving the family with four months left before Ciaron would be too old to undergo the treatment.

But kind-hearted Scarborough people stepped in and donated a total of 3,400 after the story was featured in the Evening News. The extra cash is being used to create a trust fund to help other children who have the condition.

Graham Eaveson, 44, said: "Ciaron started his treatment in mid-November and he's doing really well. He wore the helmet for an hour on and an hour off for the first couple of days, then gradually built up to wearing it for 23 hours a day.

"He's getting on great with it – there have been no problems whatsoever. We thought we could see a difference as the bottom of his head looks rounder, and when we took him for a check-up they said the bone had already moved 3mm.

"It's brilliant – we're really happy about it."

Mr Eaveson, an electrical engineer, said the family planned a quiet and restful Christmas "to get over the stress of the year". He added: "It was Ciaron's first birthday on December 15, so everything is coming together nicely. We got him all sorts of presents, including a sit-on and ride bike."

Ciaron will go to the specialist Leeds technology clinic for a check-up in January. It is thought he will need to wear the helmet for six months.
