Orthopaedic team moves to a new level - COMMENT ON THIS STORY

IT'S good news for people with bad joints as the orthopaedic team at Scarborough health trust steps up to a new level.

The team, which treats people from throughout Scarborough, Bridlington, Whitby and Ryedale and beyond, has moved onto a new ward at Scarborough Hospital.

The team is now based at the hospital on Ash and Willow wards and has six orthopaedic consultants.

Business manager Paul Rafferty said: "We are going from strength to strength here in orthopaedics and we want to let people know about the new procedures and treatments we can offer throughout the East Coast and North Yorkshire.

"We now have an excellent and very experienced team of surgeons and healthcare professionals operating in a clean, modern environment.

"We have improved the orthopaedic services beyond recognition in recent months and have been highly commended nationally for our progress. This is excellent news for our patients."

The team has recently been commended for its new patient information leaflets which were produced with the support of the hospital's League of Friends.

Nick Evans, an orthopaedic surgeon who has a specialist interest in knee and shoulder, sports injuries will also be leading the development of a specialist procedure known as orthopaedic arthroscopic surgery.

This involves ligament repairs which will be carried out as a day case procedure at Bridlington Hospital.

Mr Rafferty said: "This is an important development for the hospital trust as normally these types of procedures would involve an overnight stay at Scarborough Hospital.

"With new modern techniques, staff are now able to carry out these operations as day cases. This is not only better for patients, but it increases our capacity and frees up our theatres for other major orthopaedic procedures."
