Orchestra on tour at the SJT
THE Spa Orchestra is still on tour.
After being made to feel welcome at enjoyable but brief residencies at the Crown Spa Hotel and Westborough Methodist Church in the last few days, they move on to pastures new before finally returning to the Spa on Sunday, for the rest of their 14-week season.
Two iconic aspects of Scarborough's rich cultural life join forces when the Spa Orchestra takes to the stage in the round auditorium at the Stephen Joseph Theatre tomorrow. This has become an annual event, but for the first time both morning and evening concerts will be presented at the SJT.
In best theatrical tradition, the orchestra takes its cue from two current SJT productions. The morning show at 11am will be called Pirate Kings and Nautical Things in honour of Chris Monks' new production of The Pirates of Penzance. After an overture called Theatreland to pay tribute to the venue, the programme will consist entirely of music related in some way to the sea, ships and sailing. The ingenuity of musical director Paul Laidlaw and the amazing resources of the orchestra's library of music will create a morning of easy-listening and entertaining music, says promoter Stephen Walker.
The evening show plays on the idea of the Alan Ayckbourn comedy How the Other Half Loves. All the items will have some sort of relevance to the theme of love in its many forms. The show begins at 7.30pm (not the usual Spa time of 7.45pm).
On Friday there will be no morning concert at the Spa as the orchestra members pack their instruments and journey up to Whitby for their annual visit to the Pavilion. Always a highlight of the season, the programme will consist of musical fireworks in the form of orchestral showstoppers, including the Can-Can, Ravel's Bolero and many famous marches, waltzes and selections from the shows.
The pattern returns to normal on Sunday in the Suncourt at 11am.
