On your marks for 2010 race

THIS year's Race For Life campaign has been officially launched and women across Scarborough are being urged to sign up.

Race for Life is one of the town’s biggest fundraising events and last year 1,500 people took part.

This year, the 5k race, which women walk, jog or run, takes place on Sunday July 18 at 11am at Oliver’s Mount.

Organisers handed out information about the event to shoppers in the Brunswick Centre.

They hope around 1,800 women will take part this year.

Claire Wase, Cancer Research UK’s event manager, said: “This year, Cancer Research UK’s Race For Life is going to be full of amazing moments for everyone – from lining up at the start, side by side with thousands of other women, and reading the inspirational “back-signs” worn by participants to the fantastic sense of achievement from crossing the finishing line.”

Miss Wase said people were already signing up for the event and this year she hoped more than 85,000 would be raised.

She said: “We had a really good response from people in the Brunswick Centre.

“Lots of women told us they had already signed up or were planning too.

“This is the first year I have organised the event and I am very excited. Hopefully women in Scarborough can come together to raise a substantial amount money for Cancer Research UK.”
