Offshore wind opportunities
REPRESENTATIVES from Scarborough will be meeting with a delegation of Danish green energy companies today (Thursday September 2) as part of a three-day visit to this country.
They are involved in the offshore wind and energy generation industry and it is part of a drive to make Yorkshire and the Humber part of the multi-billion pound industry.
Tim Barraclough, a consultant at Enterprise Europe Yorkshire who helped coordinating the visit said: "The importance of this industry to the region as a whole can't be underestimated. Estimates suggest that the industry could be worth up to 50 billion to the region by 2020, bringing jobs and wealth to the people of Yorkshire and Humber.
"This visit will lead to new ventures and partnerships that drive growth in the sector to the next level."
A three-phase planned offshore wind project is planned for the North Sea and businesses in this area are ideally placed to form part of the industry's supply chain.
Theresa Lindsay, the assistant director of business development at Yorkshire Forward, added: "Our power stations currently provide 18 per cent of the nation's electricity capacity, but target's for an 80 per cent cut in emissions means we need to find alternative sources of power.
"The Humber is located in the heart of the Round 3 zones and offers the right conditions for the offshore wind industry to operate from."
