New shop set for Scarborough's Woolworths building - COMMENT ON THIS STORY
SCARBOROUGH'S former Woolworths store in Westborough – empty for more than a year – will soon be back in business.
Discount shopping chain Poundland has confirmed it will be opening a store on the site.
Though no opening date has yet been confirmed by Poundland, the company's trading director, David Coxon, told the Evening News: "We are delighted to be opening a store in Scarborough in the old Woolworths site.
"Poundland is committed to offering truly unbeatable value with everything priced at just 1 and we look forward to bringing our unique offering to Scarborough shoppers."
The former Woolworths site has been empty since January 3 last year when it shut its doors, along with more than 800 others in the country, with the loss of around 60 jobs in Scarborough.
Since its closure several major chains including Peacock Clothing and Primark have been linked with the prime high street site, but all the speculation came to nothing.
Local politicians have expressed concerns about the number of empty shops on Scarborough's streets, singling out the Woolworths site because of its prominent location.
However, Derek Bastiman, the council's cabinet member for regeneration, says he is "pleased" there will soon be a new store.
