New bus stop for passengers

BUS passengers who use the popular 121 service to Scarboro-ugh will have to get on and off at Valley Bridge instead of Somerset Terrace from Sunday.

At the moment, the hourly service terminates at the bus stop on the steeply sloping street behind Deben-ham’s in the Brunswick Centre, where passengers for Filey, Hun-manby and other stops on the way to Hull queue in their dozens.

Earlier this year, East Yorkshire Motor Services (EYMS), which runs the service, said it would need to move the stop in order to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act.

John Riby, head of technical services at the council, said re-location of the bus stop on Somerset Terrace to two bus stops on Valley Bridge would provide a level platform for passengers, making it more suitable for use by the disabled, particularly those in wheelchairs.

Creating the two new stops will involve the removal of some pay and display parking spaces on the east side of Valley Bridge Parade.

It was originally suggested that the stop be re-located to Scarboro-ugh railway station, with the bus completing a loop around Victoria Road to avoid having to make a U-turn in Westborough.

The council said the extra time this would add to the journey would be mitigated by the time saved by the bus priority system. However, that system – which is part of the multi-million pound Scarborough Integrated Transport Strategy – has still to be introduced.

Some other services which currently use the Somerset Terrace stop will be relocated to the railway station.

Nobody from EYMS was available to comment. However, a notice to passengers on the 121 bus said the change would come into force on January 4 and bus times would be unaffected by the new stop.

It added: “The change is due to safety concerns about the Somerset Terrace stop. Valley Bridge is the only alternative stop provided by Scarborough Council.”

The current bus stop is used by scores of people every day, with queues often snaking down Somerset Terrace to the roundabout at the junction with Vernon Road.

Other passengers crowd round the bus shelters, making it difficult for passengers in wheelchairs or with buggies to get on and off the bus safely.
