New move to protect sea wall and buildings at Scarborough Sea - COMMENT ON THIS STORY

A MULTI-MILLION pound scheme to improve the sea defences around Scarbo-rough's Spa complex has moved a step closer.

Consultants have been appointed to carry out site investigations to see what work is needed to protect the sea wall, buildings and cliffs along South Cliff.

The new sea defences could cost up to 35million. The 560,000 cost of the report, to be carried out by consultants Royal Haskoning, will be covered by a grant from the Environment Agency.

The study is expected to last three years and could lead to a new sea wall being built in front of the existing wall which would then be protected by rock armour.

Work will take place in two stages, the second of which will only start once further funding from the Environment Agency has been secured.

Stewart Rowe, principal coastal officer for the council, said: "This study will help us determine what exactly needs doing to improve the sea defences at the Spa. At the moment we do not know the extent of what needs to be done.

"We do know that the sea walls are approaching the end of their service-able life. These investigations are being done way in advance so we are prepared to undergo any work that is needed."

The Spa sea walls were built during the 1890s to protect the Spa Complex, the cliffs and the developed area of the Esplanade above the Spa.

It is claimed that the deteriorating condition of the sea walls is being accelerated by the effects of climate change.
