New bid to upgrade the A64 - COMMENT ON THIS STORY
SCARBOROUGH'S status as one of the country's most popular resorts will come under serious threat if the main route is not significantly improved, it has been claimed.
Cllr Andrew Backhouse, Scarborough Council's portfolio holder for highways and transport, said the continuing failure of the Government to fund an upgrade of the A64 would also jeopardise the continued regeneration of the town.
Scarborough Council's projects and partnerships overview and scrutiny committee are set to meet on Monday (March 15) to identify potential long-term solutions for the A64.
Cllr Backhouse was speaking after the announcement of a 155,000 research project in the road by Scarborough Council, Ryedale District Council, North Yorkshire County Council and York Council.
The study of the 35-mile route will look at traffic congestion and the environmental benefits of improving the A64 and it is hoped funding can be secured for individual schemes, rather than making it a complete dual carriageway.
He said: "The campaign for improvements to the A64 has been going on for years, but it has been repeatedly brushed aside in favour of other schemes deemed to be a higher priority. We believe it needs to be looked at from a different angle by taking into account aspects like accident black-spots and junction areas, so we can put forwards a sufficiently robust case to push it up the priority list.
"We are all acutely aware that there is a huge pressure on funding in the public sector, but that cannot be at the detriment of Scarborough."
