MP in train service row

SCARBOROUGH'S MP Robert Goodwill complained about the £2.50 each-way seat reservation charge recently introduced by National Express during a late-night debate on the East Coast Main Line's shock nationalisation.

But Transport Minister Sadiq Khan told him: "That's one of the reasons why this side of the chamber believes in regulating and we'll make sure when we re-tender the contract those sort of things don't happen, rather than allowing the market to dictate what happens on these trains."

Shadow Transport Secretary, Theresa Villiers, claimed ministers could not "wash their hands" of responsibility for the decision by National Express to cease funding its East Coast Main Line rail franchise.
