Mother's Day saved by posties

POSTAL workers in Scarborough sorted mail by the lights of their mobile phones to save Mother's Day after a power cut in the town centre.

They started at work in darkness at 5.30am and used every means possible to sort the mail and ensure Mother's Day cards and presents arrived on time.

The sorting office deals with around 85,000 items of mail on a Saturday and the Royal Mail was facing a major disaster before staff dug in.

Royal Mail spokesman Graham Moore said: "I think the staff have done a fantastic job. The power cut made it rather difficult to sort mail.

"Even before the natural daylight came in, staff were using lights on their mobile phones and torches because it was a very important delivery day.

"We had over 90 staff in and the managers dug in as well – their efforts have been incredible. There was a real commitment to get people's mail out and they have really gone the extra mile."

The power cut, which affected a number of other businesses in the town centre, was fixed by 10am.
