Mobility scooter rider plunges over cliff

A 75-YEAR-OLD woman was rescued after she toppled over a cliff in her mobility scooter.

The woman was trapped underneath the scooter in bushes on the side of the cliff below Esplanade, close to the mini putting green, yesterday afternoon.

She was rescued by a cliff team who used a harness to hoist her back up and was taken to Scarborough Hospital.

The woman, who is from Ossett, near Wakefield, was left shaken but escaped with just cuts and bruises.

It is believed she went over after approaching a corner too fast while coming back up the cliff.

Scarborough Coastguard Station Officer Mark Appleby said: "Due to the precarious position of the casualty a full cliff rescue was set up and carried out.

"Coastguard officers and a paramedic were lowered to the casualty and a harness was placed over her before she was hauled to safety.

"She was then taken to hospital by ambulance.

"Fortunately she only dropped approximately six feet before being stopped by bushes, leaving her underneath the scooter. This resulted in her suffering from relatively minor injuries, cuts and bruises in what turned out to be a lucky escape.

"She was there a good hour so it was quite an ordeal for her. We're very pleased she got held by the bushes which stopped her falling further."

Gill Short, of Dairydale Ice-cream, who runs a van on the South Cliff, said: "I think she lost control because it was so steep. I've never seen so many coastguards."

Adrian Perry, chairman of Scarborough and District Civic Society, is renovating a shelter near to the scene of the incident. He said: "It was quite bizarre. The lady fell into the undergrowth but she looked OK. I think she just had a few scratches."
