Mick dials up a rail adventure
A SCARBOROUGH train enthusiast is on track to raise £1,000 for charity by completing a special 3,800-mile journey.
Mick Atkin, of Edgehill Road, who has been a driver with Scarborough Dial a Ride for 15 years, aims to spell out the charity's name using the first letter of every station he stops at.
The 44-year-old has taken a week's holiday and with tickets donated by First TransPennine Express and Northern Rail, he plans to cover the mammoth route in seven days.
Mr Atkin will set off on October 26 on the first train out of Scarborough and will get his photograph taken at each of the 19 stations he stops at with the sign in the background.
He said: "At some stations I'll only have a couple of minutes to jump out, so I'll have to be quick! I'm excited about the trip and I'm hoping to raise lots of money for Dial a Ride."
Tim Lawson, the charity's deputy manager, said: "I think it's a really good idea. As well as raising much-needed funds we hope he has a really good time doing it as well."
If you would like to sponsor Mick on his train challenge please call Dial a Ride on (01723) 354434.
