Mayor and deputy to be chosen

COUNCILLORS are due to decide on Friday who will be the next mayor and deputy mayor of Scarborough.

The decision will be taken at the meeting of Scarborough Council from 2pm.

At the time of going to press one nomination had been received for the role of mayor – Cllr Helen Mallory.

There are two nominations for the role of deputy mayor – Cllr Andrew Backhouse and Cllr Michael Jay-Hanmer – and members will vote between the two nominees.

The role of the mayor is currently being investigated by members of the council’s Resources Scrutiny Committee in the hope of identifying areas within the mayoralty service where savings can be made.

Nobody actually wants to be mayor of Scarborough because it brings their name into the pu blic view and people make a point of not voting for anyone they've heard of. Anyone remember Helen Linsky , ex councillor, who got defeated in the local council elections for enjoying being the mayor rather than trying to stop the dreadful High Mill farm development...

Extreme austerity, job losses, yet still a buget for mayoral jolly ups. Ridiculous.
