Matt's got Loades of mates for Billy Elliot
AUDITIONS have taken place for a new production of Billy Elliot which will be staged at Scarborough's Futurist Theatre.
More than 60 youngsters attended the try-outs at the Grand Hotel.
Although the main parts were filled after the audition, director Matt Loades, of Take One Productions and Film School, is still looking for boys aged between 16 and 19 to play the parts of miners and policemen.
“Considering the weather we’ve had the turnout was absolutely fantastic, it was more than we could have expected,” said Mr Loades. “Talent-wise it was a really good day. The auditions didn’t finish until 3pm and we were there until 6pm deliberating over who got the roles.
“We still need some older lads so anyone who has hankered a hidden passion for the stage is welcome to get in touch.”
The production will be staged as part of the Billy Youth Theatre – a national initiative that gives schools and youth groups the opportunity to stage their own versions of the award-winning show.
Rising Scarborough star Jake Pratt, who plays the role of Billy’s best friend Michael in the West End, has already agreed to take part in workshops to advise the cast on acting and give them tips on perfecting the Geordie accent.
“We love the Billy Elliot show. It’s refreshing to work on something that isn’t all glamour and is gritty and believable. We’re also delighted to be staging it on a big professional stage at the Futurist Theatre,” added Mr Loades.
“It’s a programme the whole community can get involved in and we’re hoping to show how valuable the theatre is to the town.”
