Masterplan drawn up for station area: COMMENT ON THIS STORY

PLANS to transform the "gateway" into Scarbor-ough have moved a step nearer following a series of meetings.

Hull-based architects SNAP have drawn up a masterplan for the redevelopment of Station Square, the area around Scarborough Railway Station.

Among its main objectives is to make better use of buildings while creating a more people-friendly area.

Jane Bryant, of SNAP, said: "It is widely recognised that the area around the railway station leaves much to be desired.

"The aspiration of Scarborough Council, Urban Renaissance, and other key stakeholders is to make radical improvements to the townscape in this whole area, find new uses for existing buildings, create a framework for possible new development, improve transport interchange facilities and create better visual and physical links with the town centre, cultural quarter and seafront."

In-depth consultations and studies have taken place with interested parties including groups and individuals identified by the council as being among the key stakeholders.

Earlier this year taxi drivers, bus operators, environmentalists and architects were invited to discuss ways to improve the "gateway into the town" at a planning meeting held at the Stephen Joseph Theatre.

The major concerns put forward include:

To create a better first impression by improving the attractiveness of the area as a place of arrival by car, bus and train in Scarborough and make it unique to the town

Improved public realm and "sense of place";

Improved and co-ordinated signage and information about places to visit and things to do for visitors and residents

Improved and more legible links, and routes particularly to the beach via Valley Gardens, and other key areas of the town.

Restore and repair the existing urban fabric and historic buildings.

There were also repeated calls for a tourist information centre, extra nighttime activities, youth facilities, indoor leisure facilities, particularly during winter, and a shuttle train to the beach in the summer or even coach and horses.
