Massive queues as tickets for Othello starring Lenny Henry go on sale

HUNDREDS of theatregoers queued for tickets for a play at the Stephen Joseph Theatre which will star TV comedian Lenny Henry.

He is making his stage-acting debut in the joint Yorkshire Playhouse-Northern Broadsides production of Othello next March.

People started queuing shortly after 9am yesterday to snap up the limited number of tickets which were on sale on a first come, first served basis. The remaining tickets will be on sale on Monday January 19 when the SJT announces its spring season.

Mabel Barnes, of Westbourne Grove, said: "Barrie Rutter and Northern Broadsides have many fans in Scarborough and they're always a big hit when they perform here.

"I think the fact that Lenny Henry's playing the part of Othello is bound to be an added attraction and I'm sure the production will be a complete sell-out."

Deirdre Feather, of Dale Edge, said: "We're not really attracted by Lenny Henry playing the lead, we're just big Northern Broadsides fans and we try to see them whenever they're in Scarborough."

Dave Evans, from the South Cliff area of the town, said: "I saw Michael Gambon play Othello at the SJT when it was in Westwood in 1990. He gave an absolutely stunning performance and it will be very interesting to see Lenny Henry take on that role."

Theatre staff gave hot drinks to people as they queued along Northway, and so many people rang up to try for tickets that the telephone system crashed.

Lizzie Glazier, SJT press and marketing officer, said: "We haven't had queues for tickets like this morning for the past 10 years. There was a huge demand for tickets for Way Upstream, By Jeeves and House and Garden. We're definitely expecting a sell-out."

Box office manager Catriona Jackson-Graham said: "We are thrilled to have such a high profile name attached to such a high quality company that we have such a good working relationship with."
