Map created for culture hotspots
A NEW map highlighting Scarborough's cultural hotspots is to be created.
Called, CHART, the initials stand for culture, heritage and art and the people behind the scheme say the map “will provide a physical and website-based view of the town’s current creative and cultural activities and cultural landmarks”.
The map will also provide a trail people can follow to take them around Scarborough’s cultural highlights as well as information about the places identified on the map.
In another move forward for the project, Scarborough-based firm Electric Angel Design has been appointed to create both the printed map and the website.
Project Developer Dorcas Taylor, said: “These are two significant steps for the project. Electric Angel’s appointment will help us move forward towards creating the map and website.
“Their background and experience in the arts field made them perfect partners for the project.
“At the same time we are now delighted to have a name for the map. As well as spelling out culture, heritage and art, we felt the name CHART Scarborough also helped describe what we are looking to achieve – charting Scarborough’s cultural activities, both old and new, and putting Scarborough on the map!
“Someone once described Scarborough as having ‘little pockets of beautiful things’ and it is these aspects of the town we want to bring to people’s attention and celebrate. CHART Scarborough will be a celebration of the town’s artistic and cultural past, present and future, designed to bring that exciting aspect of Scarborough to life for residents and visitors alike.”
Adrian Riley, founder of Electric Angel Design, said the company was delighted to work on the new project.
“CHART Scarborough is a very exciting new initiative for Scarborough and we are really pleased to be involved,” he said. “It has real potential to be an excellent resource for Scarborough and we are really looking forward to working with Dorcas and the team to bring it to life.”
Electric Angel Design will initially be carrying out research with local people to get a feel for how they navigate around Scarborough.
They want to use the idea of “legible cities” – a concept developed in Bristol – to create an “intelligent map”, a map that uses the landmarks and routes people automatically use to create a new cultural map of Scarborough.
It might use things like illustrations, landmarks, photos and viewpoints as well as traditional street names.
