A SCARBOROUGH pensioner and businessman who threatened to cut off the arm of his young bride of only seven months has been jailed.

William Porter, 69, was unanimously found guilty by a jury at York Crown Court of using a kitchen knife to attack his 25-year-old Tanzanian wife.

Porter, of Belgrave Crescent, who owns Tan Express, in Victoria Road, had denied a charge of assaulting Saada Mwiazimu occasioning actual bodily harm.

At a sentencing hearing at the court, Porter, who still maintains his innocence, was jailed for 15 months.

He previously told the court the allegations were “all lies” and that the injuries were self-inflicted.

Miss Mwiazimu told the court that following a meal out in June last year, the couple had settled down to watch a DVD before going to bed in their Scarborough flat.

The court heard that Porter’s lack of sexual prowess then caused an argument resulting in him kicking his wife out of bed and then slashing her with a 12-inch bladed knife.

The court was told she still bears the scars of the attack.

Porter, who moved his new bride into his top-floor flat, an address where his ex-wife also lived in the ground-floor flat, had told the jury that it was him who had been attacked and claimed that his new wife had bitten him on both hands.

He also said his partner had attacked him in their marital bed with a bedside lamp only weeks after setting up home.

He also told the court that he had been lonely after being on his own for four years, saying the incident had been a “set-up” to get Miss Mwiazimu into the country.

However, a dental expert told the court that he had examined the alleged injuries to Porter’s hands, but could not identify them as bites.

Passing sentence, Recorder William Lowe QC said that the offence was aggravated because it had been committed in a domestic setting where Miss Mwiazimu was entitled to have felt safe and that a knife was used.
