Man is jailed for hen party attack
A GATECRASHER has been jailed after knocking a woman unconscious while she was celebrating a joint hen and stag night at home with her fiancé and friends
Daniel Ireland, of Woodland Place, who admitted causing grievous bodily harm, appeared at York Crown Court for sentencing.
The court heard the victim remonstrated with 26-year-old Ireland, who was trampling and stamping on flower beds outside the house.
Others tried to persuade a drunken Ireland to leave but the woman was punched in the face, crashing to the ground and being rendered unconscious. She was later found to have suffered a fractured jaw.
Ireland has a long record of previous violent offences including having served a four-year sentence for wounding with intent, the court was told.
He also appeared for sentencing on two charges of assaulting police officers in a separate incident when, while in drink, he leapt the counter of the town centre McDonald's restaurant and began throwing burgers around.
Simon Ostler, prosecuting, told the court that the attack on the woman took place on June 19, this year, but fortunately had not resulted in the victim having to undergo surgery. He added that the incident at McDonald's happened in May, this year, when police were called to a disturbance at the restaurant.
As officers attempted to arrest Ireland he was kicking out, striking one several times in the face and then delivering a glancing head-butt to another as he was being placed in the back of a police vehicle.
Taryn Turner, mitigating, said that her client had tried to control his drinking after a forming a relationship with a woman and having a child.
However, he had returned to his old ways after the relationship failed and had to admit that his behaviour had been "disgraceful".
The incidents put Ireland in breach of a suspended prison sentence imposed for causing actual bodily harm after he punched a 19-year-old girl in the face when she tried to stop him assaulting a man.
Activating part of the suspended sentence and jailing Ireland for the other offences, Recorder Anthony Kelbrick imposed a total sentence of 16 months in prison, telling him that, when sober, he appeared to be a respectable, hard working man, but he had to learn to stay away from alcohol.
He said that if Ireland did not get a grip on this problem he would spend a life returning to court and then jail for even longer periods.
