Madness to star at 'extreme' festival - COMMENT ON THIS STORY

FAMOUS British ska-pop band Madness are to headline a music concert held as part of the 360 Extreme Sports Festival in North Bay, the Evening News can reveal.

The band will appear at the Open Air Theatre as part of the three-day festival, which will take place from September 17 to 19, created in partnership with Scarborough Council by Fiona and Dominique Sidwell of Cirrion Group.

Fronted by Suggs, the seven-piece outfit achieved huge success in the 1980s with hits including House of Fun, Baggy Trousers and It Must Be Love.

They have reformed on several occasions since splitting in 1986 and are the headline act for tonight's opening evening of a Music Showcase Weekend at York Racecourse.

Madness are set to perform at the 3.5 million theatre, which welcomes opera superstars Jose Carreras and Dame Kiri te Kanawa tonight, on Saturday September 18.

The event is part of a three-year plan to establish a first class extreme sports destination in Yorkshire.

It will also include the UK Pro tour surf competition in Cayton Bay, featuring some of the best surfers in the UK and Europe, along with skating, BMX, and inline blades competition.

Hairy Bob's skatepark in North Bay will host some of the attractions and professionals will be in attendance to help people of all ages and abilities try their hand at different extreme sports.

A spokesman said: "The weekend promises to be fast moving, action - packed and adrenaline fuelled providing something for everyone."

The festival will host a two-day beach clean in support of the environmental campaign group Surfers Against Sewage, with goodie bags on offer for those who return rubbish to the recycle point.

The group will be promoting its ongoing campaigns at the events to make visitors aware of their responsibility to keep beaches clean.

The event will also link in with the annual motorbike races at Oliver's Mount as the circuit celebrates its 60th birthday that weekend.

Tickets for the concert go on sale next Friday.
