Lucas aids Partisans with saxophone fizz
SAXOPHONIST Lucas Dodd and acclaimed quartet Partisans are playing for Scarborough Jazz at the Cask tonight and next Wednesday respectively.
Rising young alto-sax star Lucas Dodd will be backed by the resident Mike Gordon Trio.
Lucas was eight when he started playing sax; and at 16 he was featured in a Jazz Yorkshire Nu Talent showcase.
He has his own quartet, is lead alto with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and has played with the Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra.
As a member of the Trinity College Jazz Ensemble, he played at Ronnie Scott's Club in January.
At the Cheltenham Jazz Festival in May, the Trinity College Big Band performed John Dankworth's Zodiac Suite – with Lucas playing the great man's part.
He is now studying jazz performance at Trinity College of Music in London, which he preferred to the scholarship offered to him at the New School for Performing Arts in Manhattan.
He often plays in New York and has several US mentors including Bob Mintzer and Junior Mance.
Promoter Dick Armstrong says: "Booking Lucas for Scarborough Jazz is a triumph for Mike Gordon's policy of presenting new talent. We can hear this young phenomenon for just 2 on the door."
The highly praised Partisans will be playing tracks from their fourth CD as part of a tour financed with a Jazz Services grant.
Julien Siegel (saxes), Phil Robson (guitar), Thad Kelly (bass) and Gene Calderazzo (drums) have been playing for more than a decade and have been lavished with praise.
Jazzwise magazine claims they have "played a central role in re-energising the whole Brit-jazz scene" and Radio 3's Jazz Line Up called them "one of the most exciting all-star experimental groups in jazz today".
The group won the gong for best ensemble in last year's All Party Parliamentary jazz awards.
"Their visceral, groove-based sound infuses their repertoire of be-bop, hard bop, early electric Miles Davis and ballads with sustained delicacy," says Dick.
Tickets cost 6 on the door and 5 in advance. The gig is due to start at 8.45pm.
