Literature lovers sign up for a Long Weekend

SCARBOROUGH'S highly anticipated literature festival is just days away.

The Long Weekend, which runs from Thursday to Sunday, gives book lovers the chance to meet a range of star-name authors and writing talent.

Tickets have already sold out for events with Ian Rankin, Sarah Dunant, Suzanne Potter, Janis Bright, Roger Osborne and Marina Lewycka, who replaced Susan Hill after she pulled out due to illness.

The Animated Object’s Theatre Company’s cartoon creations and puppet making sessions have also sold out.

Literature fans are snapping up seats to see Joanne Harris, Simon Hoggart, Helen Dunmore and Deborah Moggach as well as a crime panel with Mark Billingham, Stephen Booth, Denise Mina and Natasha Cooper.

Places are still available for Blake Morrison, Louis de Bernieres, Simon Armitage, Steve Cole and the Saturday panel with Christopher Brookmyre, Justin Cartwright and Jasper Fforde.

Lee Taylor, principal officer at Scarborough Library and Information Centre in Vernon Road, said: “We’ve had a fantastic response to this year’s festival and demand for tickets has been high.

“We are all thrilled that a number of events sold out very quickly. The interest generated by the festival line-up shows that there is a real passion for literature in Scarborough.”

Tickets for events are available from the Tourist Information Centre in the Brunswick shopping centre and brochures are available from any North Yorkshire Library.

Scarborough Literature Festival is supported by the Scarborough Evening News, North Yorkshire County Council, Arts Council England, 2008 National Year of Reading, Friends of Scarborough Library, Pindar and BBC Radio York.
