Lifeboat's big weekend set

SCARBOROUGH'S annual Lifeboat Weekend launches into action this Saturday to raise money for the local RNLI.

The two-day programme includes a host of treats for all the family - with music, dancing and the ever-popular Pier Jump in the West Pier among the attractions to have been organised.

Due to the tides, the Pier Jump will take place at 11am on Sunday rather than in the afternoon.

Last year hundreds of people lined the walls at the entrance to Scarborough Harbour to watch people in fancy dress throw themselves into the sea in the name of charity.

Press officer Robert Pickerill said: "It really is a highlight of the summer and we are all really looking forward to this year's weekend.

"This event is free to the public but all donations are very welcome.

It is always great fun and raises a lot of money for the lifeboat."

Entertainment will also include live music, a performance by Kevin O'Connor's Irish Dancers and "Showtime" with Tony Peers.

There will be face-painting, stocks, a climbing wall, balloon race and other small events taking place around the Lifeboat House, while Scarborough Kingfishers Swimming Club will attempt the 'Castle Foot' swim from Coffee Pot rocks to the Lifeboat House from 2pm on Sunday.
