Joe's chuffed by new book

THE second in a series of children's books about the North Bay Railway has been launched.

A Birthday Surprise at North Bay Railway has been written by local author and former primary school teacher, Joe Coates and is the second in a series of six called North Bay Tales.

Mr Coates, 60, said: "The book is similar to the first one - it is a simple but an emotional one. A child has a birthday ride on the train but things don't quite go according to plan."

The first book, The Teddy Bears' Picnic at North Bay Railway, was published in April. Both books focus on the miniature railway train ride at North Bay, from Peasholm Park to Scalby Mills.

The third story is yet to be started as Mr Coates is "waiting for the right idea"!

The publication of the second book coincides with Mr Coates's 40th wedding anniversary. He and his wife, Margaret, are having a double celebration to mark both occasions.

Mr Coates said he hoped the book would prove as popular as his first.

A Birthday Surprise at North Bay Railway was eagerly snapped up, with some copies posted to France and Australia as mementos of Scarborough to those who used to live in the town.

The book is illustrated by Bob Atkinson of Newby and published by McRay Press, based in Londesborough Road.

Books are available to buy from the North Bay Railway and St Mary's Church summer fair this Saturday.

To celebrate the launch of his new book Mr Coates is giving away three of his books as prizes in a competition.

Children are invited to create a picture, using any medium, on a piece of paper no bigger than A3.(297mm 420mm or 11.69'' 16.54'')

The theme they must base their picture on is The North Bay Railway.

The competition has three categories under which entrants will be judged: Category 1: 3-4 years, Category 2: 5-7 years and Category 3: 8-11 years.

The winners will each receive a book of their choice, either the new book, "A Birthday Surprise at North Bay Railway" or the first, "The Teddy Bears' Picnic at North Bay Railway."

Entries must be sent into the Scarborough Evening News by July 11, with name, age, address and telephone number attached.
