Invitation to hear influential artist
ONE of the UK's most influential and innovative graphic artists of the past three decades is to give an illustrated talk in Scarborough this week.
Vaughan Oliver will be discussing his pioneering work which includes groundbreaking album covers for post-punk independent music artists such as The Cocteau Twins and The Pixies.
The lecture is part of the Digital Scarborough programme of events and has been arranged by Scarborough-based graphic designer Patrick Argent on behalf of the organisation.
Mr Argent said: “His richly atmospheric and evocative imagery blurs the distinction between design and fine art and he has become something of a cult figure in contemporary graphics.”
Evening News digital editor Adam Meads said: “Vaughan Oliver’s work was a great inspiration to me while studying design at university.
“His album covers really were a revelation in graphic design and their style is something I tried to emulate.
“I am really looking forward to listening to his talk and hearing what this influential designer has to say.”
Mr Oliver’s distinctive design work has attracted both national and international clients.
He has worked on television commercials for Microsoft, Converse and Sony Playstation and book cover design for V&A Publishing, design for Harrods, print and promotional campaigns for fashion clients including John Galliano and Alberto Aspesi and posters for the V&A Museum and the Young Vic Theatre in London.
His work also forms part of the permanent collection in the Twentieth Century Gallery at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
The lecture is to be staged at the Westwood campus of Yorkshire Coast College on Friday at 2pm.
Admission is free and the talk is open to the general public.
