History group's autumn talks

SCARBOROUGH Archaeological and Historical Society have announced their Autumn programme.

A series of lecturers will offer insights on a variety of topics over the coming months.

Meetings will be held on Mondays at 7.30pm in the Central Library's Concert Room in Vernon Road.

The season will kick off on October 4 with a literary flavour with the Life in Haworth in the time of the Brontes lecture by Isobel Stirk.

Railway enthusiasts will then be treated to Prof Gordon Bell's talk entitled The Whitby and Pickering Railway: Artists, Founders and Patrons, 1836-1865, on October 18.

John Rushton will speak about Scarborough in early Tudor times on November 1.

Two weeks later, York's Other River: an archaeological investigation of the River Foss will be presented by Chris Dunn.

On Monday November 29, a lecture called Windows into the Past - Yorkshire Parish Churches will be given by Anthony Masinton.

The autumn programme will then conclude with the Church Building Stones lectrue by Richard Myerscough on December 13.

It has also been announced that the Christmas social will take place on Saturday, December 4 in the large Annex of Allatt House.

The Winter programme will then begin on Monday, January 10 with Kurt Hunter-Mann's talk on the Excavation of an unusual Roman cemetery at York.

Post excavation group 'hands on' work will be held on October 13, October 27, November 10 and November 24.

The library archives cataloguing group meets on Thursday evenings between 6.30 and 8.30.
