Historical Quaker home goes eco-friendly

A historic home for Quaker worship for almost 340 years has been converted into a fully carbon-neutral retreat house.

Worfolk Cottage, in Staintondale, officially re-opened after becoming one of the first such developments within the North York Moors National Park.

The design by architect Andrew Yeats, of Eco Arc, will include energy saving and sustainable features such as wind turbines to provide power, ground source heat pumps and a green sedum roof on a new extension.

Sedum is a plant from Scandinavia used as a roofing material for its insulative qualites. The design is also completely accessible for disabled people.

Gillian Ashmore, Recording Clerk of Quakers in Britain, opened the centre and Brian Fellowes, convenors of the development group, said: “It is great that the work for this inspiring development is now complete. Our intention is to use Worfolk as a bea- con for sustainable development.”

He continues: “As Quakers we recognise that we can all play a part in caring for the world in which we live.”
