Historic deep-sea trawler returns to the east coast: COMMENT ON THIS STORY
THE Hatherleigh, a former deep-sea trawler, has returned to Scarborough.
Skipper Terry Bunker and crew sailed up from Portsmouth last Tuesday.
She will be docked in the harbour while a series of refurbishment plans are carried out on board.
Although she is not open to the public at present, the owners, Dalby Ltd, are looking at all aspects of her future use.
Crew manager Eddie Gibson said: "We are planning to keep the ship in Scarborough as it has a strong historical link with the area".
The ship was formerly a floating maritime museum in Scarborough and is now owned by the Pindar Group, as a corporate hospitality and training vessel.
In recent months she has been used for navigation and engineering training with the United Kingdom Sailing Association.
Mr Gibson said: "We may promote the Hatherleigh as a training ship again. We would like to run a programme for cadets who wish to train for the Merchant Navy. This would be open to youngsters nationwide and even worldwide."
The 116ft-long trawler was built by Richards ironworks in Lowestoft in 1961 and was formerly named the Suffolk Punch.
She can accommodate up to 150 people when in dock and can take on board 30 tons of diesel.
