High-speed effort to create websites for charities

TWO new websites were created from scratch by 16 computer experts within the space of eight hours at a code-a-thon at the Sigma Bar in Scarborough.

The event was organised by Darrell Hooper, of Science City York, and the websites were designed for the Friends of Royal Albert Park and Scarborough Homeless and Support Services.

Mr Hooper said: “It’s going really well. We’ve got two teams working on the websites. I ran something similar in York last year that went really well. There have been some good ideas and there are still a few bits and pieces to sort out. It’s a bit hectic getting everything together.”

Judith Pullen, the manager of the homeless charity, said: “We’ve never had a website so this is new territory for us. Hopefully we will be able to relate some of our success stories and it will help raise our profile.”

Rob Hobson, the chairman of the friends group, said they already had a site before the weekend but the new one was much better. He said: “It’s very good that people are prepared to give up their time like this. It’s coming together very well.”

People can visit the two sites at www.royalalbertpark.co.uk and www.scarboroughhomeless.org.uk
