High-flying show for Open Air Theatre - COMMENT ON THIS STORY

A MAJOR new festival is coming to Scarborough in September. The "extreme sport 360" festival will run between Friday September 17 and Sunday 19 at the Open Air Theatre.

It will feature competitions in up to six extreme sport events and will also include a concert, with a big headline act announced next month for the Saturday night.

Surfing, skateboarding and brush- boarding events have already been confirmed and the organisers, the Cirrion Group, are negotiating with three more sports.

The event will also link in with the annual motorbike races at Oliver's Mount. Fiona Sidwell, chief executive of Cirrion, said: "Our ultimate aim is to build an extreme sports centre in Scarborough that will compete with the main European extreme sports destinations.

"Our aim is to look at the 25-year old plus market – the sort of 'born again' surfers and boarders. Newquay is a big destination for surfing but they've had problems with the younger fans who turn up in the summer. Extreme sports are huge in the 25 plus age group and those are the people we're aiming at - it's a completely new market for SCarborough."

As well as the Open Air Theatre, events will take place on the North Bay beach, at Hairy Bob's skatepark and in the Sands' Blue Crush bar.

Ste Asquith, a member of the Skate4Scarborough user group at the skatepark, said: "Though I'm quite surprised to hear the news, I think it's a good idea and will bring a lot of people to town.

"It would be brilliant to see some of the big names in skateboarding in town - that would raise the profile of the skatepark and Scarborough itself - it's all good if you ask me."
